語源
「liquidation」は主に後期ラテン語の「liquidatio」から来ており、「liquidus」は「液体の・流動的な」を意味し、「liquidare」は「液化する・液体にする」を意味した。
「liquidatio」は古仏語・中仏語を経て英語に取り入れられ（17世紀ごろに近代的な用法が確立）、文字どおりの「液化する」という意味から財務・法的な意味へ移った。
当初は「液体にする」という文字どおりの意味だったが、次第に「勘定を清算する・資産を現金化する」といった意味に変化した。
