語源
「linocut-printed」は 'linocut'（「linoleum」＋「cut」）と 'print(ed)' の合成語である。'linoleum' はラテン語の 'linum'（亜麻）＋ 'oleum'（油）に由来し、'cut' は切る・彫ることを意味する英語、'print' は押すことを意味する古フランス語／ラテン語起源である。
'linocut' はリノリウムが版として用いられるようになった19世紀後半〜20世紀初頭に英語で成立した語である。'print' は中世ラテン語などを経て英語に入った語で、やがて 'linocut' と結合して『リノカットで刷られた（作品）』を表す語が生まれた。
当初は『リノリウムに彫った版そのもの』を指したが、次第にその技法で作られた『版画』や『リノカットで刷った』という行為や結果を表す用法が定着した。
