語源
「lactone」は新ラテン語（化学用語）に由来し、『lact-』（ラテン語の『lac, lactis』＝「乳」）と化学接尾辞『-one』から形成された語である。
「lactone」は19世紀の化学文献（フランス語・ドイツ語経由）でラクト酸に関連する環状エステルを表す語として登場し、やがて英語の化学命名法に定着した。
当初は特にラクト酸由来の化合物を指していたが、時間とともにラクトンと呼ばれるより広い環状エステル類全体を指すようになった。
