『jettison』は中世フランス語あるいはアンゴロ＝フランス語の『geteson』『jetteson』に由来し、最終的にはラテン語の『iactare（投げる）』に由来する。
『jettison』は中世フランス語の『geteson』『getison』などから変化し、近代英語に入って『jettison』となり、『投げ捨てる』という意味を保った。
当初は「（物を）船から投げ落とす行為」を意味していたが、次第に「不要なものを捨てる・放棄する」という字義的・比喩的用法に広がった。
