「inter-」はラテン語で「～の間」を意味する接頭辞に由来し、英語の「link」は「つながり」を意味する語で、最終的には古ノルド語「hlekkr」や古英語の語形に由来する。
「interlink」は近代英語で「inter-」＋「link」の複合語として形成された。「link」は中英語期に古ノルド語／古英語から入り、「inter-」はラテン語由来の接頭辞で、学術語やロマンス語を通じて英語に定着した。
当初は「～の間をつなぐ」という直接的な意味だったが、時間と共に「（システムや要素を）相互に結びつける・相互接続する」という現代的な意味へ広がった。
