語源
「impersonation」は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語に由来し、ラテン語の接頭辞「in-」（〜の中へ）と「persona」（仮面・人格）から成る後期ラテン語動詞『impersonare』（役になりきる）に由来します。
『impersonation』は中世ラテン語の『impersonatio』やそれに由来する古フランス語的な形から中英語の『impersonacioun/impersonaten』を経て、現在の英語の名詞『impersonation』になりました。動詞『impersonate』も同じ語源から英語に入っています。
当初は「人格（仮面）を身にまとうこと／役になりきること」を意味しましたが、次第に「（娯楽のための）ものまね」や「（人を欺くための）なりすまし」の意味に発展しました。
