語源
「ideogram」はフランス語「idéogramme」に由来し、「ideo-」はギリシャ語「idea」（形・観念）に、「-gram」はギリシャ語「gramma」（文字・書かれたもの）に由来する。
「ideogram」は19世紀のフランス語「idéogramme」から変化し、19世紀半ばに英語に採用され、基本的に「概念を表す書記記号」という同じ意味を保った。
当初は「書かれた文字・記号」を意味しており、時間とともに概念を表す記号（音価を示さない記号）というより限定された用法で使われることが多くなった。
