語源
「hyperplastic」はギリシャ語の接頭辞「hyper-」と「plastic」（ギリシャ語 plastikos）に由来し、「hyper-」は「過度・超える」、「plastic」は「形成される（形作られる）」を意味する。
「hyper-」はギリシャ語の結合形で新ラテン語や医学用語を通じて英語に入り、「plastic」はギリシャ語 πλαστικός（plastikos）がラテン語・フランス語を経て英語になった。複合語「hyperplastic」は19世紀後半から20世紀初頭の医学用語として成立した。
