語源
「hygroma」は近代ラテン語の「hygroma」に由来し、さらにギリシャ語の「ὑγρόμα」に遡る。語根の「ὑγρός（hygros）」は「湿った・水気のある」を意味した。
「hygroma」はギリシャ語「ὑγρόμα」から医療ラテン語の「hygroma」として入り、形をほとんど変えずに英語の医療用語になった。その語義は水性の腫れに関連するままだった。
当初は「水っぽい・湿った腫れ」を意味したが、現在では臨床上の特定の漿液性腫瘍や先天性の嚢胞性リンパ奇形などを指すようになった。
