語源
「humanistic」は後期ラテン語・新ラテン語に由来し、ラテン語の「humanus」（人間の、人に関する）から派生した「humanisticus」に由来する。
ラテン語の「humanus」はルネサンス期に「人文(科学)」や「ヒューマニズム」を表す語を生み、フランス語の「humanisme」などを経て、19世紀に英語で形容詞「humanistic」が形成された。
当初は主に人文学や古典文化の研究に関する意味だったが、次第に人間の福祉や尊厳、人道的価値を重視する意味へと広がった。
