「hotpot」は英語に由来し、'hot'（熱い）＋ 'pot'（鍋）の複合語。'hot'は古英語の'hāt'（熱い）に、'pot'は古英語の'pott'（器、鍋）に由来します。
「hotpot」は17〜18世紀ごろに英語で複合語として成立し、一つの鍋で調理して熱を保つ料理を指しました。その後、イギリスのシチューやアジアの卓上鍋など地域的な変種を含む語になりました。
