語源
'homoousios'は古代ギリシャ語の語『ὁμοούσιος』に由来し、『ὁμός』（homo-）は「同じ」を、『οὐσία』（ousia）は「存在・本質・実体」を意味した。
'homoousios'は後期ラテン語・教会ラテン語を経て三位一体論に関する文献や公会議の議論を介して英語に入った。
当初は『同じ本質・実体であること』という一般的な意味だったが、次第に三位一体論において『父と子が同本質である』という専門的用語として定着した。
