語源
「consubstantial」は後期ラテン語の語『consubstantialis』に由来し、『con-』は「ともに／一緒に」を、『substantia』は「本質・実体」を意味し、形容詞語尾『-alis』が付いている。
『consubstantial』は神学ラテン語の『consubstantialis』から変化し、教会・神学用語として英語に取り入れられ、近代英語で現代の形になった。
当初は主に神学的文脈で「同じ本質を持つ」という意味だったが、時間とともにより一般的に「同じ性質・本質を持つ」という意味でも用いられるようになった。
