神聖に彫られた絵記号
語源
「hieroglyphics」はギリシャ語に由来し、特に「hieroglyphikos」に由来する。ここで「hieros」は「神聖な」を、「glyphein」は「彫る」を意味した。
「hieroglyphikos」は後期ラテン語の「hieroglyphicus」を経てフランス語の「hiéroglyphique」になり、最終的に英語の「hieroglyphic」（複数形は「hieroglyphics」）となった。
当初は「神聖な彫刻／刻まれた記号」を意味していたが、次第に古代エジプトの絵文字体系やその記号を指すようになり、後に比喩的な「読めない文字」の意味も生じた。
