語源
「hierarchy」は中世ラテン語の「hierarchia」から来ており、さらにギリシャ語の「hierarkhia」が語源で、「hieros」は「神聖な」、「arkhos／arkhēs」は「支配者」を意味した。
ギリシャ語の「hierarkhia」からラテン語の「hierarchia」を経て、古フランス語・中英語の「hierarchie」となり、現代英語の「hierarchy」になった。
当初は「聖職者（神職者）の支配・秩序」を指したが、次第に「一般的な序列や階層構造」を意味するように拡大した。
