語源
「hide」は古英語の「hȳdan（hydan）」に由来し、『隠す』を意味し、「seek」は古英語の「sēċan」に由来し、『探す』を意味する。
「hide-and-seek」は中英語期における『隠れる（hide）』と『探す（seek）』の文字どおりの組み合わせから発展し、近世には子どもの遊びの名称として定着し、現代英語の「hide-and-seek」に至った。
当初は単に『隠れること』と『探すこと』を指したが、次第に子どもの遊びを指す語として定着し、さらに比喩的に『はぐらかし・逃げ回る行為』の意味も持つようになった。
