語源
「hermaphrodite」はギリシャ語の「hermaphroditos」に由来し、「ヘルメス（Hermes）」と「アフロディーテ（Aphrodite）」という神の名が合わさってできた語である。
「hermaphroditos」はラテン語の「hermaphroditus」を経て、中世ラテン語／古フランス語を介し中英語・現代英語の「hermaphrodite」になった。
もともとはヘルメスとアフロディーテの子としての神話的存在を指したが、次第に雄と雌の両方の性器を持つ生物を意味するようになり、さらに医学的・比喩的な用法へと変化した。人間に対する使用は誤解や差別を生むため現在は主に「インターセックス」に置き換えられている。
