語源
「hematocrit」はニューラテン語/ギリシャ語に由来し、ギリシャ語の「haima」（血）と「krinein」（分ける）に由来する。
19世紀後半に医学用語として英語に入った（英式ではしばしば「haematocrit」と綴られた）。「haema-」はギリシャ語の「haima」から来ており、接尾辞は「krinein」（分ける）に由来する。米国英語では最初の「a」を省いた「hematocrit」が一般化した。
当初は血液成分を分ける行為や手法を指したが、次第に赤血球が占める比率やその測定値を意味するようになった。
