語源
「grapevine」は英語の複合語で「grape（ぶどう）」＋「vine（つる）」から成る。'grape'は古フランス語や中世ラテン語（例：古フランス語 'grape'／中世ラテン語 'grappus'）に由来し「房（ぶどう）」を意味し、'vine'は古英語・ラテン語 'vinea' に由来して「つる・ぶどう畑」を意味する。
『grape』と『vine』は古英語・中英語で個別に使われ、中英語期に『grape-vine』の形で結合し、最終的に現代英語の単語『grapevine』になった。比喩的な「うわさの伝達経路」の意味は後に生じた。
当初はブドウを実らせる植物を指していたが、やがて『非公式のうわさの伝達網』という比喩的な意味も持つようになった。
