語源
「gold standard」は「gold」と「standard」の近代英語の複合語に由来します。「gold」は古英語の'gold'（金属としての金）に由来し、「standard」は古ノルマン語・古フランス語の'estandard'（元は『旗・紋章』、後に『基準・尺度』）を経ています。
19世紀に通貨を一定量の金と交換できる制度を指す用語として生まれ、その後比喩的に『他と比べる際の最良の基準』という意味に広がりました。
当初は通貨を金に連動させる制度を指しましたが、時とともに『最良の基準・模範』という比喩的な意味へと変化しました。
