「glaciate」はフランス語の 'glacier'（フランス語 'glace'）に由来し、'glace' は「氷」を意味する。
英語ではフランス語 'glacier' にラテン語系の動詞化接尾辞 '-ate' を付けて作られた。語源は最終的にラテン語 'glacies'（「氷」）に遡る。
