語源
「gibbous」はラテン語に由来し、とくに後期ラテン語の語『gibbosus（ギッボスス）』から来ており、『gibbus（ギッブス）』は「こぶ・突起」を意味した。
『gibbous』は後期ラテン語の形容詞『gibbosus』から変化し、中世・近代ラテン語や（場合によっては）古フランス語を経て現代英語の『gibbous』になった。
当初は「こぶのある」「こぶ状の」を意味していたが、時を経て特に月の位相を表す「半分より明るく満月ではない」という意味でも使われるようになり、同時に「ふくらんだ・突起した」という古い意味も残っている。
