語源
「futurism」はイタリア語の「futurismo」に由来し、その語幹「futur-」は最終的にラテン語「futurus」（「これからある／未来」）に由来する。
「futurismo」（イタリア語）やフランス語の「futurisme」が20世紀初頭の芸術運動の名称として用いられ、同時期に英語の「futurism」として取り入れられた。
当初は前衛運動とその近代性・速度に関する主張を指す語だったが、のちに一般に『未来への関心・志向』を表す語としても用いられるようになった。
