語源
「frieze」は古フランス語の「frise」から来ており、巻いた・編んだ装飾や粗い毛織物を意味した。
古フランス語の「frise」は中英語の「frise/ freese」を経て現代英語の「frieze」になり、建築の装飾帯や粗い毛織物の意味で用いられるようになった。
当初は巻き毛や毛羽のある質感（髪の巻きや布の毛羽）に関連していたが、次第に建築の装飾帯や種類の毛織物を指すように意味が絞られた。
