語源
『folly』（および『follies』）は古フランス語の『folie』（『狂気、愚行』を意味）に由来し、さらに遡るとラテン語の『follis』（『ふいご』『袋』つまり空虚・膨らんだ物を指す）に由来する。
ラテン語の『follis』が古フランス語の『folie』を生み、そこから中英語の『folye／folly』となり、現在の英語の『folly』および複数形の『follies』へと変化した。
当初は『ふいご』や『中身のないもの』という意味だったが、古フランス語を経て『狂気』や『愚行』を指すようになり、やがて『愚かさ』、装飾的建築、舞台レビューなどの現在の意味に発展した。
