語源
「fluorochrome」は接頭辞の「fluoro-」（『fluorescence』に由来し、最終的にはラテン語の『fluere（流れる）』や鉱物名『fluor』に関連）とギリシャ語の『chroma（色）』を組み合わせた語に由来する。
20世紀に科学英語で『fluoro-』と『chrome/chroma（色）』を結合して造られ、蛍光を示す有色物質（蛍光色素・標識）を指す技術用語として定着した。
語根は元来「色」を強調していたが、組合せにより現在では特に実験・臨床で用いられる『蛍光性の染料・標識』を意味するようになった。
