語源
「ferroelectric」は、ラテン語の「ferrum（鉄）」に由来する結合形「ferro-」と、ギリシャ語の「ēlektron（琥珀）／電気に関する」を語源とする「electric」から英語で作られた語です。
「ferroelectric」は20世紀初頭に「ferromagnetic（磁性に関する、ferrum＋magnetic）」に倣って作られ、接頭辞「ferro-」と「electric」を組み合わせて現代英語の「ferroelectric」になりました。
当初は強磁性に類似する性質（「鉄」を連想させる名称）として名付けられましたが、現在は必ずしも鉄を含むことを意味せず、「自発的で可逆的な電気分極をもつ材料」を指すようになりました。
