語源
「exoticize」は近代英語で「exotic」と動詞化接尾辞「-ize」を結合して作られた語に由来する。「exotic」はギリシャ語の『exōtikos』に由来し、そこでは『exō』が「外から」を意味した。接尾辞『-ize』はギリシャ語の『-izein』にさかのぼる動詞化要素である。
「exotic」はギリシャ語『exōtikos』がラテン語・フランス語を経て英語に入った語であり、その後英語で接尾辞『-ize』が付加され『exoticize』（～を異国的にする）となった。現在分詞・動名詞形は規則的に-ingを付けて「exoticizing」になる。
