語源
「exhibitionism」は「exhibition」＋接尾辞「-ism」から成り、「exhibition」はラテン語の「exhibitio」に由来し、「exhibere」は「外に示す」という意味で、「ex-」は「外」を、「habere」は「持つ・保持する」を意味した。接尾辞「-ism」はギリシャ語の「-ismos」経由で「状態・習慣・主義」を表す。
「exhibition（展示）」はラテン語の「exhibitio」から古フランス語・中英語を経て英語に入り、「-ism」を付して「exhibitionism」が19世紀に成立し、文字通りの「展示」の意味と心理学的な意味の両方で用いられるようになった。
当初は「展示・陳列する行為」を指したが、時とともに「自分を露出して性的興奮を得る状態（露出狂）」や「過度の自己顕示行為」という現代的な意味に発展した。
