語源
「epicentre」はギリシャ語の語 'epikentron'（ἐπίκεντρον）に由来し、'epi-' は「上に」、'kentron' は「中心」を意味した。
'epikentron' はネオラテン語の 'epicentrum'、フランス語の 'épicentre' を経て現代英語の 'epicentre' になった。
元々は文字通り「中心の上にある」という意味だったが、やがて地震学の専門用語として「（地震の）震源の真上の地表の点」を指すようになり、さらに比喩的に「活動の中心点」を意味するようになった。
