語源情報
'epicenter'は語源的にはギリシャ語の『epikentron』に由来し、『epi-』は「〜の上に／上で」を、『kentron』は「中心（点）／尖った点」を意味していた。
歴史的変遷
『epikentron』はニューラテン語やドイツ語（例：ドイツ語の『Epizentrum』）を経て19世紀に地震学用語として英語の『epicenter』になった。
意味の変化
当初は地震の震源の真上にあたる地表の点を指したが、次第にあらゆる出来事や活動の『中心点』という比喩的意味でも使われるようになった。
