語源
「endotoxin」はギリシャ語由来で、接頭辞「endon」は「内部」を意味し、「toxin」はギリシャ語の「toxikon（毒）」に由来する。
「endotoxin」はギリシャ語由来の接頭辞「endo-（内部）」と「toxin（毒）」を結合して科学用語として形成され、主に細菌学の分野で用いられるようになった（19世紀末〜20世紀初頭に定着）。
当初は「内部にある毒」という一般的な意味だったが、次第に細菌の構成成分（特に脂質多糖類）を指す専門用語へと意味が限定された。
