語源
「empty-calorie」は英語の「empty（中身がない、価値がない）」と「calorie（カロリー）」を組み合わせた複合語です。
「empty-calorie」という用語は20世紀中頃、栄養学が発展し食品の質が重視されるようになった時期に生まれ、「empty」と「calorie」を組み合わせて、栄養価が低い高カロリー食品を表すようになりました。
当初から栄養価のないカロリーを指し、現在も同じ意味で使われています。
