語源
「embrocation」は中世ラテン語の語『embrocātiō』に由来し、接頭辞の「em-」（ラテン語の『in-』から）には「内へ・上へ」の意味があり、語根の『brocāre』（俗ラテン語／中世ラテン語由来）は「擦る」「塗る」の意味があった。
『embrocation』は中世ラテン語『embrocātiō』（およびそれに関連する古フランス語形）から中英語に借用され、最終的に現代英語の『embrocation』になった。
当初は薬液を擦り込む行為そのものを指していたが、次第にその薬液（塗り薬）自体や塗布行為の両方を意味するようになった。
