語源
「ecclesiarch」はギリシャ語の『ekklesiarchos』に由来し、『ekklesia』は「集会／教会」、「arkhos（arch-）』は「支配者／指導者」を意味した。
『ekklesiarchos』は中世ラテン語の『ecclesiarcha』などを経て英語の『ecclesiarch』になり、集会や教会の指導者を指す語として用いられ、その後は典礼を担当する教会役職に意味が狭まった。
当初は「集会（ekklesia）の支配者・指導者」を意味したが、次第に「礼拝や典礼の運営を担う教会の職務担当者」を指すようになった。
