「dysaesthesia」はギリシャ語の要素「dys-」と「aisthesis」から来ており、「dys-」は「悪い・困難な」、「aisthesis」は「感覚・知覚」を意味した。
ギリシャ語の「aisthesis」はラテン語・医学用語の「aesthesia（またはæsthesia/aesthesia）」となり、接頭辞「dys-」が付いて現代の医学用語「dysaesthesia」になった。米国では綴りを簡略化して「dysesthesia」が使われることがある。
