語源
「duchy」は古フランス語の「duché（または duchie）」に由来し、さらに中世ラテン語の「ducatus」に遡り、ラテン語の語根「dux」は「指導者」を意味した。
ラテン語の「dux」→ 中世ラテン語の「ducatus」→ 古フランス語の「duché（duchie）」→ 中英語の「duchie」→ 現代英語の「duchy（複数形 duchies）」。
当初は「指導者の支配・職務（ducatus）」を指していたが、次第に「公爵が治める領土・領地（duchy）」を意味するようになった。
