語源
「docetism」はギリシャ語の『dokein』（δοκεῖν）に由来し、その語幹は「見える、見かける」を意味した。
『docetism』はギリシャ語の『doketismos』からラテン語の『docetismus』を経て英語に入り、教義を表す語として中世以降の神学文献で用いられ、現代英語の『docetism』になった。
当初はキリストが実際の身体を持たず、見せかけだけだとする特定のキリスト論的教義を指したが、次第に身体や物質的現実を単なる見かけとみなす見解一般にも用いられるようになった。
