語源
「disaggregation」はラテン語の要素に由来し、特に接頭辞「dis-」と動詞「aggregare」に由来する。ここで「dis-」は「離れて・別に」を意味し、「aggregare」は「ad-」が「〜へ」を、「gregare」（「grex」から）を「群れ・集団」を意味した。
「disaggregation」は動詞「disaggregate」と名詞化接尾辞「-ion」によって英語で形成された。動詞は後期ラテン語の「disaggregare」や中世ラテン語の関連形に遡り、中英語の「disagregacioun」のような形を経て現代英語の「disaggregation」になった。
当初は「集められたものを分ける行為」（「集団から切り離す」）を指したが、時間とともにデータや経済などの専門分野で「集計値をより細かい構成要素に分ける」という意味で使われることが多くなった。
