語源
「diehard」は英語の語句「die hard」から来ており、「die」は「死ぬ」、「hard」は「硬く・断固として」を意味していた。
19世紀ごろに文字どおり・比喩的に使われていた「die hard」から、まず「die-hard」として名詞・形容詞化され、現代では一語の「diehard」になった。
元々は「激しく死ぬ（死に抵抗する）」という文字どおりの意味だったが、次第に「変化を頑なに拒む人」や「強固な支持者」という比喩的意味に変化した。
