語源
「defrock」はラテン語と中英語の要素の結合に由来する：ラテン語接頭辞「de-」と中英語の「frok(e)」。ここで「de-」は「離す・取り除く」を意味し、「frok(e)」は「フロック（衣服）」を意味する。
「defrock」は17世紀頃に「de-」＋中英語「frok(e)」の形で造られ、元は衣服を取り去る文字通りの意味から、聖職の地位を剥奪する比喩的な意味へ発展した。
当初は「衣服（フロック）をはぎとる」という文字通りの意味だったが、次第に「聖職を剥奪する」という特定の意味に変化した。
