語源
「ordination」はラテン語の「ordinatio」（『ordinare』から）に由来し、『ordo/ordin-』は「秩序・配列」を意味した。
ラテン語の「ordinatio」は中世ラテン語や古フランス語を経て中英語の「ordinacioun/ordination」となり、最終的に現代英語の「ordination」になった。
当初は「整理・配列」を意味したが、次第に特に『聖職などへの正式な任命（叙階）』を指す用法が定着した。
