語源
「definite」はラテン語の 'definitus' に由来し、接頭辞 'de-' は「完全に／下へ」、'finire' は「限る／終える」を意味しました。'indefinite' はラテン語の 'indefinitus' に由来し、接頭辞 'in-' は「～でない」を意味します。
「definitus」は古フランス語や後期ラテン語を経て、中英語の 'definite' のような形になりました。'indefinitus' も同様の経路をたどり、否定の接頭辞を含む形で中英語の 'indefinite' になりました。
もともとは「境界を定める／限定する」を意味していましたが、現在では 'definite' は「はっきり定義された／確定した」、'indefinite' は「はっきり定義されていない／無期限の」などの意味になりました。
