語源
「decouple」は接頭辞「de-」と英語の「couple」から成る。ここで「de-」は「取り除く・逆にする」、"couple"は古フランス語・ラテン語由来である。
「couple」はラテン語の「copula」（結びつき）から古フランス語を経て英語になり、「decouple」はその「de-」付きの近代的な形成語で、19–20世紀に用いられるようになった。
当初は文字どおり「結合を外す」という意味だったが、次第に技術的・経済的・抽象的文脈で「依存関係を減らす」という広い意味で使われるようになった。
