語源
「counterposition」は現代英語に由来し、接頭辞「counter-」と名詞「position」から成る。ここで「counter-」は「反対・対立」を、「position」は「置くこと・位置」を意味する。
「counter-」は古フランス語の「contre」（「反対」の意味）を経て、最終的にラテン語の「contra」に由来する。「position」はラテン語の「positio」（「置く」、ラテン語動詞「ponere」から）に由来する。英語ではこれらを結合して複合語が作られた。
当初は文字通り反対に置くことや並置を指したが、やがて反対の見解や立場といった比喩的用法にも用いられるようになった。
