「counter」は古フランス語の『contre』に由来し、ラテン語の『contra』は「～に対して（反対）」を意味しました。
『counter』は古フランス語の『contre』から中英語の『countre／contre』などを経て現代英語の『counter』になりました。なお、物を数える・台を意味する別の『counter』は古フランス語の『comptoir』やラテン語の『computare』に由来します。
