語源
「counter-earth」は現代英語の複合語で、『反対/向かい』を意味する 'counter' と 'earth'（地球）から成る。
この語は古代ギリシャ語の『antichthon』（ἀντίχθων）を反映した英訳／複合語として英語で使われるようになった。ギリシャ語では 'anti-' が「向かい／反対」、'khthōn' が「地」を意味する。その後、近代以降にフィクションなどで『counter-earth』として用いられるようになった。
元来は見えない地球の向かい側にあるとされた古代の宇宙観上の存在を指したが、時代が下るにつれ歴史的・哲学的用法に加え、現代のフィクションでの『別の／複製された地球』という意味でも用いられるようになった。
