語源
「contradistinction」はラテン語の要素、接頭辞「'contra'」と語「'distinctio'」に由来し、「'contra'」は「反対・〜に対して」、「'distinctio'」は「区別する（行為）」を意味した。
英語ではラテン語の接頭辞「'contra-'」とラテン語『distinctio』から派生した語（古フランス語や中世ラテン語を経て英語の'distinction'になったもの）を結合して『contradistinction』という現代英語が形成された。
当初は「反対による区別（反対して区別すること）」という意味合いがあり、次第に「対比によってなされる区別」という現在の意味に変化した。
