語源
「contraction」はラテン語の『contractio』（動詞『contrahere』に由来）に起源があり、『con-』は「一緒に」を、『trahere』は「引く」を意味した。
『contractio』は古フランス語の『contraction』や中英語の『contraccioun』などに変化し、最終的に現代英語の『contraction』になった。
当初は「引き寄せること」や「引き寄せの作用」を意味していたが、時を経て「語の短縮形」「（経済の）縮小」「子宮の収縮（陣痛）」などの意味に広がった。
