語源
「commensurable」はラテン語起源で、特に後期ラテン語の『commensurabilis』から来ており、'com-'は「共に／一緒に」、'mensura'は「測ること・尺度」を意味した。
『commensurable』は後期ラテン語の『commensurabilis』や中世英語の形を経て英語の現代形『commensurable』になった。
当初は「同じ尺度で測れる」という文字通りの意味だったが、次第に「比較できる／比例する」という一般的な意味にも広がり、数学的な専門用語としての意味も保持している。
